40 days awake: Man claims he set world record by not sleeping for 968 hours

A photographer is claiming he set a world record by staying awake for more than 40 days.

Tyler Shields, 28, from Los Angeles says he didn’t get a wink of sleep for 968 consecutive hours.

He believes he more than doubled any previous sleepless bids, but the Guinness Book of Records won’t recognise his stunt, saying it's too hard to prove and too dangerous to attempt.

Forty winks: Photographer Tyler Shields, 28, claims he stayed awake for 968 consecutive hours but Guinness Book of Records won't recognise his stunt saying it's too hard to prove

During the wide-eyed marathon, Shields said he overcame fevers, headaches, eye pain and the loss of feeling in his legs.

Ironically, one of the toughest parts of the experiment was dropping off to sleep when he achieved his goal.

‘I slept six hours and when I woke up it took me 15 minutes to put my pants on,’ he told AOL News.

‘I was stumbling around my room. Never have I experienced anything like that. One of my assistants said it was like the equivalent to being hung over. I don’t drink, so I
wouldn’t know,’ he added.

‘It was terrible. I kind of wish I had stayed awake.’

But he said that at least none of his friends can moan to him about being tired.

‘Nobody will be like, ‘I’m exhausted. They just can’t say that to me anymore.’

He said he felt groggy for a whole day and slept through the next night and then gradually felt himself returning to normal as his balance and memory came slowly back.

‘It’s important for people to do things and believe in things that may seem impossible. Just because someone tells you something is impossible, doesn’t mean it’s impossible,’ he said.

A team of monitors watched over him 24 hours a day to make sure he didn’t nod off.

‘Would I advise anyone to do it?’ said the celebrity photographer. ‘No, I wouldn’t. But I think it’s pretty awesome,’ he added.

World's Largest Liger (Lion+Tiger)

Know what's a Liger? It's a cross breed of a Lion male and Tiger female...
The 10ft Liger who's still growing...

He looks like something from a prehistoric age or a fantastic creation from Hollywood . But Hercules is very much living flesh and blood - as he proves every time he opens his gigantic mouth to roar. Part lion, part tiger, he is not just a big cat but a huge one, standing 10ft tall on his back legs. Called a liger, in reference to his crossbreed parentage, he is the largest of all the cat species.

On a typical day he will devour 20lb of meat, usually beef or chicken, and is capable of eating 100lb at a single setting. At just three years old, Hercules already weighs half a ton.

He is the accidental result of two enormous big cats living close together at the Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species, in Miami, Florida , and already dwarfs both his arents. "Ligers are not something we planned on having," said institute owner Dr Bhagavan Antle. "We have lions and tigers living together in large enclosures and at first we had no idea how well one of the lion boys was getting along with a tiger girl, then loo and behold we had a liger."
50mph runner... Not only that, but he likes to swim, a feat unheard of among water-fearing lions. In the wild it is virtually impossible for lions and tigers to mate. Not only are they enemies likely to kill one another, but most lions are in Africa and most tigers in Asia . But incredible though he is, Hercules is not unique. Ligers have been bred in captivity, deliberately and accidentally, since shortly before World War II.
Today there are believed to be a handful of ligers around the world and a similar number of tigons, the product of a tiger father and lion mother. Tigons are smaller than ligers and take on more physical characteristics of the tiger.
Look at the size of the head on this thing.. :o)

World's Most Prolific Mother (69 babies)

Feodor Vassilyev (1707-1782), was a peasant from Shuya, Russia. Though not noteworthy himself, his first wife, Valentina Vassilyeva, set the record for most children birthed by a single woman. She gave birth to total of 69 children; however, few other details are known of her life, such as her date of birth or death. She gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, 7 sets of triplets and 4 sets of quadruplets between 1725 and 1765, in a total of 27 births. 67 of the 69 children born survived infancy. The modern world record for giving birth is held by Leontina Albina from San Antonio, Chile. Now in her mid-sixties, she claims to be the mother of 64 children. Of these, 55 are documented. The mother with the greatest number of kids that are not tiwns is Livia Ionce.
This Romanian woman, 44, gave birth to her 18th child in Canada in 2008.

Most expensive bottles of whisky is a Bowmore

[Sep 28] LONDON,UK— A 157-year-old whisky was sold for more than 29,000 pounds (41,500 euros/59,200 dollars) Friday, setting a world record auction price for a bottle of Scotch

The Bowmore single malt, which was bottled in 1850, was sold at McTear's auctioneers in Glasgow for 29,400 pounds to an anonymous telephone bidder, beating the distillery itself.

The price, which included buyer's premium, comfortably beat the pre-sale estimate of between 15,000 and 20,000 pounds.

The whisky, which was was sold on behalf of a private owner, is the oldest known bottle of Bowmore in existence.

An auction spokesman said the sale came despite the bottle's cork dropping into the whisky itself.

Bowmore's brand director Glen Moore said they had planned to bring the bottle back to the distillery to take pride of place in its new visitor centre on the island of Islay, off Scotland's west coast.

"We bid beyond the value limit we had set ourselves, but unfortunately, the winning bidder went beyond that," he said.

"There are some serious whisky collectors around the world, and we know Bowmore is incredibly popular amongst them."

Twin brothers William and James Mutter operated the distillery from the 1850s until the early 1890s when Bowmore Distillery Company Limited was formed.

The bottle was presented to William Mutter in 1851 at the time of him giving up his share of the distillery and has remained in the family for generations.

Thai couples break world record for kissing

Pattaya: Seven couples in the Thai tourist resort city of Pattaya broke the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous kiss on Monday, managing to keep going for more than 32 hours.

The organisers of the Valentine's Day kissing marathon celebrated with champagne as the couples beat the previous longest-kissing world record of 32 hours, 7 minutes and 14 seconds that was recorded in Germany in 2009.

Even though the record has been broken, the couples will carry on kissing until only one is left.

Competition organiser Somporn Naksuetrong said the kissing could continue for another 12 or 14 hours.

If the lovebird's lips part, even for a moment, they are disqualified from the competition.

They're also not allowed to sit or sleep.

Making the competition even more difficult, couples have to stay in a one square metre space together, only leaving the area for toilet breaks.

They even have to continue kissing while using the toilet and staff accompanying them to make sure they do.

The winner will receive a diamond ring worth one-thousand pounds and a two-thousand pounds cash prize.

World's Longest Legs_more than 4 feet long

Russian woman Svetlana Pankratova has, according to Guinness World Records, the longest legs of any woman in the world. While she is not the world's tallest woman, her legs are 132 centimetres (4 ft 4 in) long. Because her upper body is of much more typical dimensions, she is 196 centimetres (6 ft 5 in) tall. She has also very large feet, size 13 (US) / 46 (EU), making shopping for shoes difficult. From 1992 to 1995, Pankratova played women's basketball in the USA, and on 2008 she appeared in Trafalgar Square in London on September 16, 2008 with He Pingping, the smallest man in the world, to promote the 2009 edition of the Guinness World Records.

World's Tallest Bicycle.

World's Tallest Bicycle was made by Terry Goertzen, a pastor of the Jubilee Mennonite Church in Winnipeg. The bike was 18 ft. 5 in. (5.55 m) tall!

The origins of the feat were innocent enough. Terry’s wife SuAnn had given him a welding set for Christmas and soon he was building bikes, including a multi-layered one. On a whim, he checked the world’s record for tallest bicycle. When he realized he was already close to the 4.3 metre record, he decided to beat it. The local media enjoyed the event, headlining it with language about prayer or getting “closer to God.” A crowd of some 200 also had fun at it, cheering Terry on and buying the hot dogs and drinks sold by the church to raise funds for bicycles for students in India.

Youngest Living Mother - Chinese schoolgirl sets world record

CHANGCHUN, China -- A nine-year-old schoolgirl gave birth, on January 27, by Caesarean section, to a healthy boy weighing 6lb (2.75 kilograms) - setting the world record for the Youngest Living Mother.
The unnamed girl was brought to a hospital in Changchun, which lies in the north-east of the country, when she was eight and a half months pregnant.

Her family - said to be from Songyuan in north east China - has refused to discuss the pregnancy but said they had reported it to police. In Songyuan, sex with a child under the age of 14 attracts a mandatory rape conviction and jail sentence, the Daily Mail reported.

Police were reportedly trying to find out who the baby's father was. A nurse told the City Evening News the girl "looked very mature" but it was not known how she had become pregnant.

In Shanghai, China's largest city, one hospital recently said that about 30% of abortions were carried out on school-aged girls.

China has launched a nationwide campaign to preserve the innocence of its children, banning any sexual content from the internet. Secondary school pupils are often suspended or expelled if they are suspected of having sexual relationships.
However, critics point out that there is a need for proper sexual education in order to combat the fast-rising number of teenage abortions.

Last year, a clinic in the central city of Chongqing was criticised after advertising half-price abortions for anyone with a student card. Advertisements for "Student Care Month" showed a schoolgirl wearing uniform, saluting and saying: "I am a student, I have special rights".

The Guinness world record for the Youngest Mother in recorded history was set by Lina Medina, a five-year-old girl from Pisco, Peru.
On Mother’s Day in 1939, when Lina was just under 5 years and 8 months old, her baby was delivered by cesarean section. It was a healthy 6 pound baby boy, and was named Gerardo after the doctor who originally diagnosed Lina’s pregnancy, Dr. GĂ©rado Lozada.

In 1957 another Peruvian girl, aged nine, gave birth to a girl weighing just over 6lb and, curiously, it was in 2006 that yet another Peruvian girl, aged eight, gave birth to a 4lb 4oz girl. Several other girls aged nine, from Thailand, Singapore, Rwanda and Brazil, have also given birth. Mothers aged as young as 10 and 11 have also become an increasing occurrence.
